Serious Capabilities

An order picker can be low-level, medium-level, or high-level, depending on its load capacity (the amount of load it can withstand) and lift height (the highest level the platform can be raised to). A typical high-level order picker has a load capacity of up to 3,000 pounds, and the platform can be lifted to a height of up to 40 feet.

No Amateurs

Like any industrial equipment, the order picker too needs to be handled with care and should only be operated by trained personnel. In addition to that, OSHA guidelines for employees who work at elevated heights also need to be followed to minimize the risk of accidents.

Given below is a list of OSHA approved safety procedures that need to be followed while operating an order picker.

  • You should not operate the order picker if the platform is elevated to a height of 152 inches (roughly 12 feet) and above. You should lower the platform, drive the truck to the next location, and then raise the platform again. The rule, however, only applies to free-roaming trucks. Wire or rail guided trucks can be operated even if the platform is elevated to a height of 152 inches and above.
  • The operator’s platform should be at least 20 inches wide. Its surface should be non-slippery. It should have an overhead guard as well as side guards for the protection of the operator.
  • You should wear a safety harness while operating the equipment.
  • You should always honk while turning a corner and while approaching an intersection.
  • You should make sure the load does not exceed the maximum permitted load capacity of the truck.
  • You should always drive the truck at a safe speed and avoid sudden changes in direction, as it can affect the stability of the equipment and cause it to overturn.
  • You should maintain a safe distance from other vehicles operating in the area as well as workers at the ground level, particularly if your platform is elevated.
  • It is a wise idea to post signs or erect barriers to prevent people from accidentally walking into your area of operation. If multiple vehicles are operating in the same area, a flag person can be posted at the site to control the flow of traffic.
  • Finally, you should always be alert and cognizant of your environment – if you are lost in thought even for a moment, you risk not only injuring yourself but also those who are nearby.

Intolerable Order Picker Safety Guidelines

Accidents involving order pickers can be minimized to a remarkable extent or avoided altogether by following the OSHA guidelines listed above. No one is perfect but what bothers a lot of people is carelessness and when someone is injured or even killed because of basic neglect that is when the hammer needs to come down.

Attention to Detail

The equipment should be operated, cleaned, repaired, and maintained only by trained personnel. It should also be inspected on a regular basis to make sure all the essential parts are in perfect working condition.
